Find your favourite watch from the Geneva Collection now.
]]>On July 05, we release two stunning new timepieces which capture one of our most popular colour-ways in a way we’ve never done before.
Fusing inspiration from Australia's Blue Mountains and the deep blue lakes of Switzerlands, we've created something truly special; something that will inspire you with each glance to chase your dreams of wanderlust and exploration.
The idea for our two new timepieces was born during The 5TH’s Founder’s (Alex) journey to Switzerland, the world’s home of watchmaking, and the origin of where these pieces were created.
Two years ago, I began a life-changing journey, sparked by the desire to offer something more to our 5TH Family. The 5TH’s City Collections have always pushed the boundaries of what a contemporary timepiece can be, and for our next addition, I wanted to go further than any direct-to-consumer watch brand had been before.
I jumped on a plane to Switzerland (remember this was 2019 and we could still do things like that). The first stop was Geneva, where I visited some of Switzerland’s finest watchmaking facilities, and met with some incredible designers whose resumes include some of the world’s most luxurious watch brands. I was hooked/inspired/in awe of their attention to detail and passion for the watch industry - I knew right away that this was exactly where I needed to be, and creating a new collection here was the next step.
After experiencing the world’s hub of watchmaking, the vision was clear, and I got to work on designing a new collection of watches that would bring this impeccable Swiss quality to our 5TH community. I began the process of collaborating with the designers and manufacturers I met on my journey, brining their knowledge and passion for the industry into our design process; reworking some of our signature details.
It’s two years later and I could not be prouder with what we’ve achieved. The 5TH’s offering now includes a collection of carefully crafted Swiss Made timepieces, which impeccably pair Swiss craftsmanship with the signature contemporary design aesthetic of The 5TH’s classic city Collections. In true 5TH style, these timepieces are available exclusively to our community on the 5th of every month, with new styles coming soon.

First released for Prada’s SS 2000 Womenswear show, The Prada Bowling Bag is the equilibrium that hovers between casual and classy. The bag made a revival in the brand's Resort 2020 season. The watch that also sits in this area of equilibrium is our Hesse timepiece from the Geneva Collection. The silver details of the Prada padlock and zip on the bag are perfect when paired with the Hesse’s silver oyster bracelet.
One of my all time favourite Miu Miu collections is from SS 2003, where Miuccia distills what it is to be a Miu Miu girl. It is playful, unpretentious and elegant - Hawaiian florals, crumpled satin and knitwear. Here I have paired our Starlet timepiece with a green floral vest and the ‘Knitters Bag’ from Miu Miu SS 2003 collection.
Gucci SS 1999, the show that emanates a summer of love. Haute-Hippie vivid florals, swinging feather bottomed skirts and the debut of Gucci's colourful ‘Jackie Bag’. Inspired by the eclectic, joyful clothes featured in this show, I paired my orange Jackie bag with our golden, glowing timepiece, the Valere. The Valere is the timepiece that can float seamlessly between minimalism and eccentricity.
Once again Miu Miu finds its perfect pair in our rose gold ‘Heather’ timepiece. Miu Miu’s Resort 2015 Crochet Dress is playful, sweet, and a homage to traditional crafts. Miuccia re-introduces the crocheted ‘granny’ square motif in her most recent F/W 21 show. Blushing beside each other, this dress and the Heather are playful elegance.
For International Women's day this year we are focusing on 5 of our top Female Style Icons, taking style notes and looking for unique details in the ways they dress, and then matching our watches to their look.
Iris Law masterfully holds eclecticism and elegance in equal measure in each of her playful outfits. Never shy of colour and texture, Iris styles bright fur, patterned shearling, silk tassels, duchess satin, always making sure to adorn her hands and nails with quirky rings (namely, La Manso and Blobb) and vivid nail art. The missing final piece… The Starlet watch from our Geneva collection.
Grace, brilliance and courage- both in dress and in character. Amanda Gorman, the glowing yellow poet whose words resonated at the US inauguration earlier this year. She stood as a beacon of hope and a reminder to embrace colour, Amanda was seen wearing a sunflower yellow coat and a strawberry red satin headband. Once again embracing colour and duchess satin, the prized poet was beating pink perfection for her recent photoshoot with time magazine. To complete the bright yellow and red look, a Valere from our Geneva collection, its sunray dial shining against Amanda’s sunflower yellow sleeve.
The ultimate sophisticated woman- Actress Tilda Swinton has always championed sleek silhouettes and quality materials. Luxury and comfort combine as Tilda Swinton shows us exactly how blue and green work together as vibrant silk flows harmoniously from moss green into Yves Klein blue in this suit/robe hybrid pairing. For Tilda, the shoes are an always important detail, as seen below in both her red and black patent leather heels as well as her royal blue velvet loafers. We would gift Tilda Swinton The Russi watch from our Geneva collection, the missing extra element of sophistication on top of her carefully composed outfits.
We love Devon lee Carlson for her careful ability to combine expensive, high end staple pieces with quirky vintage and second hand items. Devon’s style always maintains an element of play, below she unconventionally pairs the heavenly white SS19 orseund iris silk set with cherry red cowboy boots and a original 2000 edition Prada nylon bag (both vintage items). In the other image, Devon is not afraid to mix monograms in her pairing of the SS 20 Miaou monogram dress and bandanna with vintage Fendi monogrammed sunglasses. A classic, glowing timepiece that would sing against each of Devon’s quirky pairings is our Andress from the Geneva
collection.
Adwoa Aboah’s style is made distinct through her abundant use of accessories. A multitude of bracelets and rings- both antique and new, both silver and gold, are always present regardless of whether she is wearing sneakers and jeans or head to toe bottega veneta (pictured left). Adwoa’s style is elusive and evolving, she describes it as “chang[ing] with the wind,” always held at the ends with stacked and layered jewellery. Our Itten timepiece, with its mixed metal jubilee bracelet would sit perfectly among one of Adwoa’s bracelet stacks.

]]>We catch up with Ruby Ryan, one of our favourite local photographers.
While photography will always be my main focus, videography is picking up this year so I have learnt some valuable skills for my clients though exploring that. I enjoy the process of videography and helping my clients bring their vision to life, using my eye and experience in photography to create great videos just makes sense.
I love shooting beauty and editorial. I've got some really exciting fashion clients that I work with regularly & fashion is fun because we always have a big team to collaborate with and lots of creativity. I'm really looking forward to shooting more beauty brands and high-end beauty content, this year. I think there will be a creative surge in 2021, which will bring more shoots and collaborations.
Mecca is a dream client of mine and something I'll be working towards - so keep an eye out!
Locations are big for me. Whenever I see a really cool location (in real life or online), I get so inspired and think of my clients and how I can add these really inspiring visuals to their shoots too. Pinterest & Instagram are great too, as I'm so inspired by other creatives work. I love some of the locations The 5TH shares on their instagram - so cool!
I found that I've come out of this tragedy with lots of positive experiences, mainly in the form of life lessons. I would say that learning to live day-to-day has been a big learning curve, rather than trying to look so far into the future. It’s really made me slow down - which I am usually not good at haha! - And forced me to appreciate the days as they came, not knowing what could happen tomorrow. I am really into planning so this has been difficult for me! It has also helped me to realise what makes me happy and what is important to me, and that doing things for myself is a positive.

Whether its Valentines or Palentines for you this week, here is our curated list of top 5 Romantic Movies, that have both intrigued and inspired us.
And if we were in charge of the costumes, the watches that we would dress the protagonist's in.
The Before trilogy (1995-2013) is made up of three films directed by Richard Linklater, spanning the evolving love story between lovers Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy.) Both filmed and set at nine-year intervals, each film exhibits the pairs’ eternal love, from its origins through to its culmination 18 years later. Linklater is both honest and mysterious in his show of growing love. Julie Delpy’s outfit in the first of the three films - Before Sunrise - speaks of effortless elegance. Tousled hair, Red lip, and a simple T-shirt under a chocolate brown ankle-length dress. The missing element: Our beacon of sophisticated simplicity, The Hesse.
2. Call Me by Your Name.
Call Me by Your Name (2017), directed by Luca Guadagnino is a coming-of-age romantic drama film based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Andre Aciman. This film is the last installment in Guadagnino’s thematic “Desire” trilogy, after the equally intriguing I Am Love (2009), and A Bigger Splash (2015). Guadagnino transports us to the Northern-Italian summer of 1983 where we watch the simultaneously unravelling and evolving relationship between 17- year-old, Elio Perlman (Timothee Chalamet), and Oliver (Armie Hammer), the 24-year-old graduate student assisting Elio’s father who is an archeology professor. The film is harrowing, inspiring and wonderful. The love-story is enveloped in the sound of cicadas and splashing water as well as the scent of hot grass and fresh tomatoes. Olivers’ crisp linen shirt and shorts against the warm peach tones of the movie would be perfectly complemented by our Scala timepiece from the Milan Collection.
3. Her.
Her (2013), written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze is an American science-fiction romantic drama divulges the confusing love between Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), and Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an artificially intelligent virtual assistant personified through a female voice. Set in a near future Los Angeles, Theordore is lonely and introverted, unhappy due to his impending divorce. The love grows through Theordores fascination with Samantha's ability to learn and advance psychologically. Theodore’s norm-core style consisting of a red or white shirt and wool twill trousers should have been accompanied by our Brera timepiece from The Milan collection.
4. The English Patient.
The English Patient (1996) directed by Anthony Minghella is a British-American epic romantic war drama film based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Michael Ondaatje. The film shows a story of four people finding themselves in an abandoned villa in Northern-Italy in the last months of World War II. The namely English Patient, features a man (Ralph Fiennes) burned beyond recognition who speaks to the young nurse caring for him in a series of flashbacks encompassing his true identity and the love affair with Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas) which he was involved in before the war. The movie inspires with raw and passionate story-telling. Katherines outfits poignantly distill timeless elegance which is what our Valere timepiece similarly aims to do. The glowing Valere against Katherines soft white muslin wraps and burberry beige coats is the perfect missing piece.
5. Sliding Doors.
Sliding Doors (1998) written and directed by Peter Howitt, is a romantic comedy-drama starring Gwyneth Paltrow (Helen Quilley) and John Hannah (James Hammerton). Alternating between two storylines, two potential paths, the film displays the juxtaposing destinies of the central character’s life, all depending on whether or not she catches a particular train. Helen drops an earring in the lift and a man picks it up for her- it is her reaction to this simple interaction that dictates her eventual life path. This film is thought provoking in a light and entertaining way. Gwyneth Paltrow's style throughout Sliding Doors is consistently striking and sophisticated. Her bleach blonde pixie cut sits above a charcoal turtleneck leading down to a full-length leather trench. Always dressed in fitted black silhouettes, the suave-styled character Helen would suit our rich dark timepiece, The Russi from our Geneva collection.
]]>There is a shared thread that runs through this time period at Prada. These shows are eternal elegance with focus on materiality. Whether you are in sportswear or your best dress, there is always a way to look elegant and sophisticated and Miuccia Prada shows us how to do this best. Prada uses simple yet inventive silhouettes that carry and combine dreamy garments made of silk, structured sets and sportswear, always inspiring elegance and class.
Delving a little further into the past, Prada SS 1993, the wistful show that prioritises fun and sophisticated elements in single sweeping looks. Muccia showcases a summer of love with topstitched suedes and leather daisy chokers. There is an elegant spin on hippy/festival elements such as daisy chains which become leather belts, chokers and arm bands, the raffia crochet gown and haute hula-like skirts. By keeping the pallet neutral and confining the garment materials to pure linen, suede, leather and cotton, there is a balance maintained between frivolity and refinement. These looks would pair perfectly with the ‘Andress’ watch from our Geneva collection.
Dialling back to late 90’s Prada. SS 1995 Ready to wear was the show where Miuccia Prada showed us how to achieve sophisticated elegance with a simple wash of silk. Where the silk slip once stood as a mere undergarment, this show reminds us of the slip as its own entity. The versatile perfection of silk is embodied in various forms, there are the fine silk knit tanks and collared T-shirts, The pleated oyster organza skirts and then the tailored organza silk slip. This show worships the transformative material of silk, exhibiting it as a layer among tight collared knits, hot pants and most notably, on its own - simply paired with a fine strapped sandal. Our blushing timepiece ‘Starlet’ from our Geneva collection, would compliment this shows silky compositions with perfect poise.
A uniquely transitional show, where 3 delineated moods carry the viewer through an athletic moment with fanny packs and nylon vests, heavy linen tailored bermudas and vests and finally the hippy elegance hybrid moment. Prada notes “My collection included all the cliché’s of hippie fashions such as mirrors and flowers, but totally destroyed them at the same time, in reality, it was the least hippie collection imaginable.” The show feels like an immersive journey through one girls closet- where her distinct style permeates each facet of her wardrobe, from her sportswear through to her day-time best. This imaginary ‘IT girl’ would surely have a ‘Russi’ watch from our Geneva collection in her wardrobe too...
Miu Miu, often referred to as ‘Prada’s little sister’ exhibited a fresher, more girly side to Miuccia’s design. SS 2003 showed an amalgamation of bright colour, high hemlines, and pattern in a completely wearable way. The hibiscus and banana print through to the leaf cut out skirt suggested a hawaiian tropical theme which was somewhat subverted by cosy elements of layered v-neck knits and the classic ‘knitters bag’ silhouette (image 3). The purple hibiscus print from this show would style well with the orange and purple two-toned ‘Spirit’ watch from our Optimism collection.
Spring 2003, another favourite Prada season where Muccia creates a fuse of colour, sport and ‘60s silhouettes into luxurious harmony. This collection uses sporty elements in a fresh and unique way. Gisele Bündchen opens with hybrid vintage flight goggles thrust atop her head, a swimsuit-esque tank and chartreuse coloured duchesse satin skirt that is placed in the same way a sarong or towel would sit at the hips after a swim. This combining of luxury fabric and sporty elements is distilled in a way that is wearable and inspiring. The Goggles were not the only accessory that stood out in this show, futuristic embossed leather swing bags with silver hardware dissolved any suggestion of vintage emerging from the flight goggles. Consider pairing a sleek swimsuit with a bold trouser or skirt, and our elegant ‘Luminary’ automatic watch.
]]>"I can only include 5 in this list - but there are so many more!"
"So, when I lived in Sydney this was my favourite spot - and I lived on Bondi Beach. For fresh water and saltwater lovers alike, this gorgeous beach is fully equipped with a waterfall that flows right out into the ocean which means you can set up camp for the day and have jumps off the waterfall, and have long walks on the beach. Sounds like heaven, huh?"
"If you don’t mind a 10 minute walk, which some of my friends have called bush bashing(you know who you are), this scenic spot is just for you. Perfect for a day with friends, take down a picnic hamper and a few glasses of your fave chilled wine and bobs your uncle, its a party! It’s a great surf spot for advanced surfers, on high tide is perfect for snorkelling depending on water temp, and on low tide had plenty of rock pools to explore. Due to this spot being slightly off the beaten track, its usually a bit more quiet than most beaches on Victorias Mornington Peninsula, infamous for being packed out all summer. Don’t tell too many people about this one!"
"I feel like I shouldn’t be talking about some of these spots because they’re so damn unique - this gem included. Malua bay is one of my families go-to get away locations on the South Coast of NSW. Its right near the ever popular Batemans bay which is a fisherman's paradise, but in this particular cove and its immediate neighbours I have swam with dolphins, eaten bags of freshly shucked oysters, kayaked with whales and caught lobsters WITH MY BARE HANDS (note, that last one is slightly exaggerated)."
"One of the must visit locations on Great Ocean road, Loch ard gorge is a treasure trove filled with gorgeous natural rock formations and stunning snorkelling spots. Perfect for a little road trip outside of Melbourne, I visited this spot for the first time a few years ago on a campervan trip down the Great ocean road and still think it's one of the most gorgeous spots to visit."
"This one is well off the road, so you will literally have to hike in to this beach and it is well worth the extra effort for this pristine beach, inside the Wilsons Promontory National Park. This one requires a little exertion, as it is a (very scenic) 3.5 hour hike each way, but a great one for people who are interested in entry level hiking. On the other side of your hike in, a vast cove just outside of the marine reserve awaits you which means plenty of wildlife and nature. I completed this one LAST WEEK and am super excited to try the other gorgeous spots on the prom."

What’s the fascination with architecture you may wonder? A connection to Architecture is where the 5th started, and what is now The 5TH, was once an online design blog that collated, shared, and talked about the relationship between spatial design and value.
You see, I grew up at the feet of two Architects, who worked tirelessly (and still do) to create spaces of ‘value’ for their users. Their firm, McBride Charles Ryan, has now done all kinds of projects from small to large, but it has taken time to build recognition for their utter dedication and commitment to create spaces of value for their intended users.
Being surrounded by this uncompromising commitment to upholding the vision for a project was inspiring, and I wanted to find out what made these people tick. In many ways, I created to blog as a way to connect with more people like this; the creative doers of this world and the people who inspire me - little did I know that this path of creating a design blog was going to lead to me working designing our own watches and working with a vast array of creative doers to bring them to life and offer them to the world, sharing with them a little piece of this uncompromising commitment to design that they can wear, appreciate, and be inspired by everyday.
This seemingly normal and unassuming house is a hidden gem. From the front, it looks like all the other houses in the street, but from the moment you open the door and you’re greeted by the bright carpet, you quickly clue onto it not being your standard house. As you walk through to the back section of the house you get the full appreciation for how this space has been transformed into something for utter enjoyment.
Maybe Melbourne’s - and the worlds - most coveted design spaces, known for the way it challenges all the prescribed conventions of house a space/home should be. Built in 1958, this house is a testament to the fact that good design stands the test of time.
A periodic masterpiece that was restored to its glory after a fire ripped through it in 2015. This building is an eccentric and brilliant 1960s post-modernist building designed by revered Bulgarian architect Iwan Iwanoff and named after the family who built it in 1965.
Originally designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in 1924. The historic cinema has been repurposed as an education facility for students studying film and digital media at RMIT as well as housing public cultural events.
This 4 storey building is built on a tiny block on a small lane in the east of Melbourne’s CBD. It houses offices, as well as a ground level cafe for the Honorary consul of Monaco. Within the office, large apertures to the west are shaded by deep balconies and the adjoining plane trees. Outdoor balconies and the ‘green-roofscape’ provide areas of release from the office desk. The building is an essay in fine-grained urbanism, it seeks to talk about its consular role as well as to enhance the pedestrian experience of the city.
Hope you enjoyed!
Alex
]]>Our focus is on elevating the things we already have through timeless investments and attuned design eyes. Last year we refined our aesthetic senses, consuming mostly online content, generating digital dreams… now it is time to acquire some of these things we have been dreaming about - Indulge in a new book, repurpose a piece of old furniture with 70s swiss design in mind and take that slow time on the weekend to arrange an ikebana. Take a journey through our design guide, and lean into one of your design desires.
With the right inspiration, the smallest design change in your space can make the biggest difference.
“Arranging flowers” or “making flowers alive,” The Japanese art of flower arrangement. Dating back to the Heian period, the art of the ikebana was established when floral offerings were made at altars. Now, these elegant and inventive floral compositions are used to adorn the home. Using elements of balance, composition, colour and form, there are endless opportunities for a delicate and intriguing arrangement that will transform your space.
It is time to start opening your eyes to the realm of rare books. Replace your stack of old magazines and the odd art book with a collection of books that will excite and entice at each glance, books that will reveal themselves over time with remarkable images and words. World Food Books, located in Melbourne city has a curated collection of rare and out of print books, endless categories of books from Fashion to Anarchism are available online and in store. Instagram accounts such as @press_sf and @offpressbooks also curate and sell a range of niche and curious books. At the 5TH we are obsessed with unique design and overall exclusivity and we believe elements of exclusivity should run all through your space: From the watch on your wrist through to the stack of books on your coffee table.
Moving the focus from rare books to the furniture masterfully created by Swiss-born Architect, Artist and Interior designer, Le Corbusier. Corbusier’s designs were centred around Inexpensive yet mindfully manifested furniture that has been adapted to human functions, flowing in true harmony with the human body and its movement. Here are a couple of Corbusier’s famous Swiss furniture designs, and one of our most recent Swiss watch designs, The Luminary Automatic. We are always paying homage to great Swiss design, maybe you can keep in mind Le Corbusier’s words “Long live the good taste manifested by choice, subtlety, proportion, and harmony,” when designing your own space.

APERTUR: A small opening in the dial that displays certain information such as date, day, month.
BAND: A ring on your finger, or a group who plays music. When referring to watches, it refers to a bracelet or strap; not as a band.
BEZEL: The ring around the crystal lens on the top portion of a watch. It is usually made of metals such as gold, gold-plate, or stainless steel. It holds the glass or crystal lens in place.
CASE: The container that protects the watch movement. It also gives the watch an attractive appearance. Cases can come in many shapes.
CASEBACK: The underside of a watch that lies against the skin. Some casebacks are made of crystal allowing you to view the watch movement. View our Automatic watches, which have an open caseback for more.
CHRONOGRAPH: A time that can be started and stopped to time and event. This can be found on all of our London collection watches.
CROWN: A button, often fluted, on the outside of the watch case used to set the time, when pulled out, and for setting a watch calendar. A screw-down crown is used to make the watch more water resistant and to help keep out dust.
CRYSTAL: A transparent cover that protects the watch dial. Crystals are made of glass, plastic or sapphire. Non-reflective coatings on some crystals prevents glare.
DIAL: A plate, with a metal base and visible through a crystal, that carries certain indication, such as the hours, minutes and sometimes seconds.
GOLD PLATING: An electro deposited layer of gold with the thickness is measured in microns. “GP, HGE, GE” or any fraction after a number are stamps indicating gold plate.
HAND: The indicator that moves over the dial to point at the hour, minute or second. Watches generally have three hands to show the hours, minutes and seconds.
HOROLOGY: The science of the measurement of time.
HOUR MARKERS: Arabic numerals, Roman numerals or symbols placed around the dial to mark the hours.
LUGS: Sometimes referred to as horns, lugs are projections on the watch case. There is a spring bar between the the lugs that is used to fix the strap or bracelet to the case. The lugs on our Geneva collection are integrated into the bracelet via a custom designed end piece.
LUMINESCENCE: Luminescence refers to emitting rays of light. A luminescent material is deposited on numbers and hands in order to read the time in the dark.
MOVEMENT: The inner mechanism of a watch that keeps time and powers the watch’s functions.
PVD: Physical vapor deposition is a thin coating applied to a case to add colour for aesthetic purposes. This additional process, ads a lot of time in manufacturing and is generally why gold, rose-gold, and black watches are more expensive.
TONGUE: A tonque, or tang, is a movable metal piece in a buckle which penetrates the holes in a leather strap.
WATER RESISTANCE: The ability of a watch to withstand (resist) splashes of water on the timepiece. This will indicate the depth that a watch can be worn underwater. ATM in this context refers to the atmospheric pressure the watch can withstand. For a watch with 10 ATM it can withstand 100M of atmospheric pressure under water.
SCREW BACK: The back of the case has a thread so that it can be screwed into the case.
SMALL SECONDS DIAL: The seconds are displayed by a hand in a small subsidiary dial and not from the center of the timepiece.
SPRING BAR: A spring loaded metal bar mounted between the case lugs (horns) used to attach a strap or bracelet. All of our leather straps have a spring bar mechanism.
STRAP: A strip or band of leather or rubber that holds the watch to the wrist. It must be non-metal to be considered a strap; a metal version is referred to as a bracelet.
SUB-DIAL: A small dial placed inside the main dial on a watch’s dial. Watches can have as many as four sub-dials (auxiliary dials). They give information not provided by the main watch dial such as chronographs, alarm, dual time zone, and calendar.
QUARTZ MOVEMENT: A movement that is powered by a quartz crystal. The crystal oscillates to power the timepiece. Considered the most accurate time holders due to the frequency of quartz crystal oscillating 60 times a minute, which helps keep the time of the watch. All of our collections (besides the Automatic watches have a quartz movement.
AUTOMATIC WINDING: This referred to winding that occurs through motion on the wearer’s wrist, rather than through winding the watch manually. An automatic watch that isn’t worn for a couple days will need to be wound again to get started again.
BALANCE: The heart of a mechanical watch movement. The mainspring provides the energy and the balance (coupled with the hairspring) swings to divide time into equal parts.
BALANCE SPRING: A very small spring in a mechanical watch that returns the balance wheel back to its neutral position.
BALANCE WHEEL: A part of a mechanical watch that oscillates and divides time into equal portions.
CALIBER: Also known as calibre, the caliber is the size or style of a watch movement.
JEWELS: Sapphire or Rubies that reduce friction by acting as bearings for gears in a mechanical watch.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT: A mechanical movement is powered by a main-spring and works with the balance wheel.
ROTOR: Part of an automatic watch that winds the mainspring by constantly rotating.
STEM: The shaft that connects to the movement’s winding mechanism. The crown is fitted on the opposite end.
WHEEL: Also referred to as a pinion, the wheel is a circular part that revolves around an axis to transmit power.
WINDING: Winding is the action of tightening the mainspring of a watch. This is done by hand (turning the crown) or automatically (by the motion of the rotor).
See more information on our Automatic watch care page: www.the5th.co/pages/mechanical-watch-care
BIENFACTURE: A Swiss word that refers to the high quality of a piece of work or an object. In French, it means “to make well”.
COTES DE GENEVE: A regular wave pattern obtained by engine-turning and polishing. This pattern is displayed on the rotor of our Automatic watch.
SWISS MADE: A watch can only be considered to be Swiss made if, (1) its movement is Swiss; (2) its movement is cased up in Switzerland and (3) the manufacturer carries out the final inspection in Switzerland. If the watch displays ‘Swiss Made’ on the dial, that means that a certain percentage of the watch is made in Switzerland. Our Geneva collection are Swiss and our Automatic watches are Swiss Made, which can be seen on the dial.
]]>Rose Gold is perfect peachy pink, it illuminates the warmth in all skin tones and is a reminder to romanticise all the wonder in life … to see our Lives in Pink, La Vie En Rose.
In the 19th Century Rose Gold is said to be first amalgamated by Carl Fabergé, renowned jeweller to the Czars in imperial Russia. Carl Fabergé was best known for the famous Fabergé easter eggs that used expert goldsmithing and colourful precious stones whilst also reviving the lost art of enamelling. Through a series of royal commissions, Fabergé procured the coveted title of ‘Goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown.’ Fabergé blended yellow gold and copper to create this beguiling Pink material and it was on an Imperial egg where Rose Gold first adorned itself.
Instrumental in propelling the popularity of Rose Gold was Cartier, who among other Rose gold pieces, created the classic “Trinity Ring” combining three bands of different Golds. This ring was first commissioned by the infamous Jean Cocteau, Writer, Artist, filmmaker and playwright. Cocteau iconically wore the ring on his pinkie finger from the 1920s onwards.
Over the decades, Rose Gold popularity has waxed and waned through the influences of high fashion and starlets. As a result of the Cartier and Cocteau influence, this romantic and alluring metal gained popularity in the 1920’s… now in 2020 we think Rose Gold is due for a revival. At The 5TH, the revival will be more luxurious and high quality than ever. We have chosen the perfect alloy ratio to achieve a rich gold with a beautiful romantic flush.
The watch that truly set our brand in motion at our first release in 2014 was the Rose Gold and Peach watch. We sold out of this watch a myriad of times, and it became a big part of our identity. This style was many of our customers' first watch, their first introduction to the brand. Since the Rose Gold and Peach our brand has evolved and matured, and it is time this classic design evolves with us… Introducing The Heather and The Starlet, releasing October 15.
Limited Pieces Releasing October 15.

This month we are focussed on colour, the array of subtle feelings that each shade evokes, the art of colour- how when particular colour is placed beside another it can vibrate and create an oscillation in the human eye (Rothko, a true master of this) . How a soft powdery blue can bring quiet and calm, and a vibrant yellow can carry the energy of the sun. In this year of stillness there has been opportunity to become more attune to the nuances of colour. Maybe you have noticed the way the light transforms your room from a glowing afternoon yellow to dusky blue at exactly 5:49pm, or maybe you have brought nature indoors and are now tending to the magenta petals of your orchid or the chartreuse leaves of your pilea plant. Whatever it is, this long period of inwardness can only mean an outward burst at the end of it all. The outburst will be vibrant, appreciative, optimistic. Through all of this we are becoming grateful for the small things, more attuned to nature and the miracle of colour… we are oysters filtering out the grey in everything. Let’s put the dull days we have all had to endure this year behind us, let’s start planning colourful outfits and shift our focus to the prospects of doing things for the very first time again. The after party will be great.
1. Emili Sindlev, @emilisindlev
Whether it is blue skies or grey, Emili Sindlev always finds a way to transform herself into a beacon of colour through her clothing. Both strolling through the white walled Mykonos and pausing for a picture while glamping, Emili dressed head to toe in colourful pieces. Highlights: That Archival Chanel surf tank from Summer ‘02 and that bubblegum pink Helmstedt dress.

2. Jean-Baptiste Bernadet, @jeanbaptistebernadet
Jean-Baptiste Bernadet superimposes bright colours in oil paint in an impressionistic style. These intersecting clouds of colour convey a sense of the paradisiacal. As such an array of colours dance around these large canvases, a visual universe is opened up- a panoramic universe of imagination, possibility and joy.

3. Cierra Nia, @simply.cie
One of our favourite Instagrams this month belongs to the wonderful Cierra Nia who is far from afraid of expressing herself through colour. Cierra adorns her hands in an eclectic mix of rings and fun nail art. Cierra also appears to have gotten her bejewelled hands on the coveted Telfar bag in this glowing dandelion yellow.

4. Marine Serre Spring 2021 Ready to Wear
Marine Serre’s new Spring 2021 collection uses texture and fluctuations of blue to create these metamorphosing garments. These select looks transform the wearer into a human, sea creature hybrid. Gathered and iridescent fabric creates the impression of silver fish glimmering in the sea, the iconic Marine Serre symbol is flipped upside down becoming more like fish scales than the crescent moon. Squid Jigs even dangle from the fingertips of fitted gloves. This collection is a whole lot of fun and pushes monochromatic colour to its limits.

2020 has turned the way I work with clients on its head! In many ways, it’s been a return to the way I started out shooting. Just me, left to my own devices with a camera and some lights for hours on end in a spider web of cables and light stands, in a very cramped space. Instead of getting physical sign-off from clients on set, I’m now jumping on video calls to chat through setups and to get shots approved. I definitely miss the vibe of being on set with a good crew and having creative minds bouncing ideas off each other as we go. You still get it to an extent in isolation but it’s just not the same.
It’s impossible to pick just one favourite, there’s so many that stand out for different reasons. I think Coopers Sparkling has to be up there due to the scale of it, and also due to the team I was working with on the job being absolute legends. The 5TH Tokyo range campaign is up there too. Again, great team, great concept and it just all came together exactly how it was envisioned. And a bit of a random one is a job I did for a company called OEG who run outdoor education camps for schools. One of my first goals with photography was to inspire people to get out outdoors and this job was a big realisation of that. I really enjoyed stepping out of the studio and just winging it to make the most out of each location. Even though the days were long and exhausting it was some of the most fun and rewarding work I’ve had the privilege to do with a camera. And hopefully, it inspired one or two young people to get into the outdoors!

FRENCH AND SLOW JAZZ IN COUELLE'S ARCHITECTURE-SCULPTURE
The Architecture of Jacques Couelle again blurs the line between nature and architecture, as well as building and sculpture. Couelle achieved this harmony through his adaptation of the design of the home to the surrounding terrain and the future inhabitants rather than the other way around. Natural slopes of the land, natural human positioning and the direction of light dictated the design.

Architect Roberto Baciocchi champions the importance of being in harmony with the original message that an old building wants to communicate, when renovating/renewing a space. Colours and textures of the space echo the spirit and history of Paris; sofas are covered in velvet, Baciocchi’s favourite fabric because of its magical ability to reflect light.
